Subject: Re: The purpose of this news group: netsurfing?
3 cheers for the install FAQ and or group. I am amazed at the amount of
confusion available about how to install Winsock compliant clients. I am
also among those who have been slowly forging ahead to try to remove some
of my own confusion. I still haven't been able to configure Mosaic or
Cello, but I assume if I continue to read this Newsgroup I will prevail.
Thanks for taking the initiative to provide something so obviously needed.

Subject: Problems with WSGopher 1.0
Regarding GPFs with WSGopher 1.0:
First, I'm sorry that folks are having problems with WSGopher. The version I
posted apparently has some problems that either weren't uncovered during the
beta period (which was several months) or were introduced near the end, in an
effort to fix other problems. It seems that many people are *not* having
problems, but obviously I'm going to fix my attention on the ones that do.
[ The folowing might apply to lots of programs, not just WSGopher ]
I'd like to make a few suggestions about reporting problems with free software:
1) Try to include a description of what you were doing. This isn't always
possible, I know ("I was using it for quite awhile, then it quit"; this
happens to me too, occasionally). But, if you *can* say 'it fails with this
server and this object, then include the bookmark for that server or object,
that is infinitely more helpful.
2) If you run Dr. Watson or some other error logging program, a copy of the
output from that is usually helpful.
So, why would you do this? If you like the software, that's one reason. If
you consider that there is no registration fee or any kind of use fee, and
that the software is pretty good compared to what you pay $$$ for, that's
another reason.
Trumpet users: I just received a packet driver for my 3c503 that may actually
work with Trumpet; I'm hoping to try it soon. Then, if there are any Trumpet
related problems, I can find out directly. WSGopher has been running at the
local university campus on Trumpet, but I haven't had any reports of problems
(yet).
Lan Workplace users: I may have to get back to you, because we don't have
that here. I work at a U.S. gov't research lab, rather than a software
development firm, so I don't always have the luxury of purchasing network
software I don't have, or trying configurations. If you're willing, let me
know and I'll probably just advise you of updates, and ask you to try them out.
Thanks, and best regards,
Dave
